Forced by an often fatal disease to undergo long-term treatment, cancer patients are unable to work and are driven to despair by their loss of income. The patients are tired. Their relatives are worried. Their poverty worsens day by day.

“In cold weather, I’m tired and feel like vomiting after each round of chemotherapy. In recent days, I’ve received injections.”

“I’ve felt extremely uncomfortable during the recent cold spell. Even healthy people are uncomfortable. It’s worse for us.”

“I’m warm lying in bed. But every time I have to go out, it feels very cold because my blood pressure is low.”

Those are patients we talked to at Hanoi Oncology Hospital, which has coordinated with the Vietnamese Students Association in South Korea to give gifts – scarves, caps, and cash to disadvantaged patients.

Doctor Nguyen Vinh Quang, the hospital’s Director, personally handed the new scarves and woolen caps to the patients.

“We are patient-focused. This program shows that the doctors’ care about the patients to give them better morale to fight their disease,” Quang said.

83-year-old patient Do Dinh Ung of Giao Thuy in Nam Dinh province said: “We are from rural areas and our economic resources are limited. The generosity of the hospital and other benefactors makes patients like me feel better.”

Hanoi Oncology Hospital is working with donors to bring a happy Lunar New Year to poor patients. Over the past 6 months the hospital has organized 28 charity programs that have delivered 5,000 gifts, 3,000 meals, and 4,300 USD to 6,000 disadvantaged patients.
